Backlinks
Backlinks create a bidirectional web of connections between pages.
How It Works
When you link from Page A to Page B:
<!-- In page-a.md -->
See also [Page B](/notes/page-b/)
Page B automatically shows a "Backlinks" section listing Page A.
Why Backlinks Matter
Traditional organization is hierarchical:
- Categories contain pages
- Finding related content requires manual curation
Backlinks enable networked organization:
- Any page can link to any other
- Connections emerge as you write
- Old content surfaces through new content
Digital Garden Pattern
Backlinks are essential for @digital-garden style sites:
- Write atomic notes on single topics
- Link liberally between notes
- Let the network structure emerge
- Discover connections through backlinks
Excluded Collections
The slides/ collection doesn't participate in backlinks. Slides are typically standalone presentations that shouldn't clutter other pages' backlinks.
Backlink Display
Backlinks appear at the bottom of each page:
<section class="backlinks">
<h2>Backlinks</h2>
<ul>
<li><a href="/blog/post/">Related Post</a></li>
<li><a href="/notes/topic/">Topic Note</a></li>
</ul>
</section>
Style them in your layout CSS.
